These days, air conditioners can be found in almost every car. This device helps maintain the right temperature and humidity levels, providing comfort in changing weather and making every journey more pleasant. However, like any other type of equipment, it can sometimes break down or require regular inspection. Professional air conditioner repairs will remove existing faults and ensure smooth operation of the entire system.
Common Air Conditioner Faults and Causes
- Noisy air conditioning system. If you hear a constant, irritating noise, the air conditioner’s belt may be worn or have slipped off. This noise can come from the belt pulley, expansion valves, an electric clutch plate slipping, or vibrations from the compressor mounting plate.
- Unpleasant odors. Under certain conditions, mold or bacteria can form on the evaporator core surface, often carried in the air. This results in an irritating smell inside the vehicle.
- Insufficient heating. In this case, the air flow from the air conditioner may be blocked by dirt in the heat exchangers, water radiators, or condensers. Repair work may restore the pressure switch and coolant temperature indicators to the right level, improve the electric fan’s performance, and prevent the engine coolant from overheating.
- Air, moisture, or non-condensable gases in the system. These issues are often caused by an incorrect refrigerant amount – either too much or too little. Contaminated refrigerant or a moisture-saturated filter can also lead to problems.
- Expansion valve failure. This type of valve may fail due to a malfunction in the thermostatic valve capillary tube. The mechanism inside the valve can also jam, causing air conditioning system faults.
- Ice on the evaporator core. If you notice this, the thermostat sensor may be faulty, the adjustable compressor displacement control valve may be malfunctioning, or the fan may not be working as it should.
